Signs yours needs replacing
- Rewireable fuses (the old ceramic type with fuse wire) rather than breakers
- A board with no RCD protection at all — common in installations more than 25 years old
- Breakers that trip repeatedly, or one that won't reset
- Scorching, cracking, a burning smell, or heat around the board
- A wooden or metal-clad board of unknown age
- Your EICR flagged the board with a C2
- You are adding an EV charger, a shower, or a garden supply and there is no spare capacity
What's included
A modern board protects each circuit individually — so a fault on a garden socket doesn't plunge the whole house into darkness. We fit RCBOs per circuit where the installation suits it, add surge protection where appropriate, and label every circuit clearly so the next person to open it knows exactly what they're looking at.
The day of the upgrade
The power goes off for most of the day, so we agree timing in advance — particularly for anyone working from home, running a business, or relying on medical equipment. We leave the board labelled, the certificate issued, and the cupboard tidier than we found it.

How long does a consumer unit replacement take?
Most domestic replacements are a single day, including testing and certification. Larger properties or installations that reveal pre-existing faults can take longer.
Will my power be off all day?
For most of it, yes. We agree the day and timings with you in advance so you can plan around it.
Do I legally have to replace an old fuse board?
There's no law forcing you to replace a working board. But if an EICR codes it as C2, or you're a landlord needing a satisfactory report, it will need addressing.
Why did new problems appear after the board was changed?
A modern board is far more sensitive than an old one and will detect faults — such as damp or deteriorated cable insulation — that the old board ignored. That's the protection working.
