Who needs it
Most non-domestic premises need emergency lighting on escape routes and in certain areas, as part of the responsible person's fire safety duties. That commonly includes:
- Shops, offices and workshops
- Cafés, pubs and hospitality
- Houses in multiple occupation (HMOs) and blocks with communal areas
- Village halls and community buildings
- Industrial units with plant or hazardous areas
Testing — what and when
Failed fittings are usually a battery or lamp, and we can often replace them on the same visit. The annual test is planned for a quiet period, because the fittings need time to recharge afterwards.
- Monthly — a short function test to check every fitting lights on mains failure
- Annually — a full-duration test, typically three hours, proving the batteries hold out
- Recorded — results logged so you can show an inspector or insurer the system is maintained
Upgrades
Older fluorescent emergency fittings are being replaced across the board with LED units that use less energy and last longer. Often combined with an LED lighting upgrade.
